FAQs
Do I need a GP referral to see a psychologist at Little Thinkers?
No referral is required — parents and carers can book directly. However, if you’d like to access a Medicare rebate, a referral from your GP, paediatrician, or psychiatrist is needed under a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP).
What is a Mental Health Care Plan?
A MHCP is a referral from your GP that allows your child to claim Medicare rebates for psychology sessions. Your GP will assess your child’s needs and provide the plan if they are eligible.
Can I use private health insurance?
Yes — many private health insurers provide rebates for psychology sessions. Please check directly with your health fund to confirm your level of cover.
Do you offer a reduced fee if we book more than one assessment?
Yes. If your child requires multiple assessments (for example, cognitive and academic testing, or an ADHD and autism assessment), we can combine them into a single assessment package at a reduced overall fee. This helps streamline the process and ensures you receive a comprehensive picture of your child’s strengths and needs.
What is your cancellation policy?
We understand that unexpected things happen. If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, please let us know at least 48 hours in advance. This allows us to offer the time to another family. Cancellations with less than 48 hours’ notice, or missed appointments, may incur a cancellation fee.
How many sessions are covered by Medicare?
Under the Mental Health Care Plan, eligible children can claim a rebate for up to 10 individual sessions and 10 group sessions per calendar year. The rebate applies to the session time, not assessment reports. The rebate is around $90 per 50 minute session.
Are psychological assessments covered by Medicare?
Most full assessment packages (like cognitive, ADHD, or autism testing) aren’t covered by Medicare. The testing sessions and report are privately billed. However, if your child has a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) from a GP or paediatrician, you may be able to claim a rebate of around $90 for both the first appointment (intake session) and the final feedback session. This can help reduce the overall cost a little.
Do you accept GP or paediatrician referrals?
Yes, absolutely. We welcome referrals from GPs, paediatricians, and other allied health professionals. We work collaboratively to ensure continuity of care for each child.
At what age can children complete the assessments?
Cognitive (WISC-V): Suitable for ages 6–16 years.
Academic (WIAT-III): Suitable for ages 4 and above, though most often used for children 5+ who are in school.
ADHD / Behavioural Assessments (Conners-4): Typically used for ages 6–18 years.
Autism Assessments (ADOS-2 & interviews): Can be administered from preschool age through adolescence.
